The Country House hangs its hat on its much lauded burger, and I can see why. The 1/2 pound cooked-to-order beef patty is juicy and perfectly sized for a hungry customer. The recent addition of a stoplight at the Country House intersection on 55th street should make it a little easier to access. The parking lot is a good size, yet it fills up during busy lunch and dinner service, speaking to its popularity. I've eaten here a few times, and since I moved a bit closer to the restaurant, I thought I'd give their takeout service a try twice over as many weeks. I ordered the burger each time (medium), and by the time I brought it home--less than five minutes later, it was still nice and hot. They offer your choice of grilled or raw onions, and the burger is offered with tomato slices and a leaf of romaine to top it off (no ketchup or mustard for a take out order). A generously sized dill pickle spear is provided. You're offered your choice of steak fries, potato salad or onion rings. I tried the fries and rings on my two most recent visits. There were a couple of problems in these two orders which lowered my rating to 3 stars. On my first visit, the beef had a funkiness to it which seemed to indicate that it had turned the corner from fresh. I thought it might be my imagination, so I gave them another shot a week later. On this instance, the burger itself was excellent, but the onion rings were room temperature when I ate them under 5 minutes after taking my order home. I was a little nervous about them -- I had a view into the kitchen from where I was standing, and the onion rings had been placed on the foam take out box four or five minutes prior to the burger being added to complete my order. In fairness, I'd rather that my main course be hot and the side cold than vice-versa, but they should be able to time it so that both hit the plate at about the same time. I will give the Country House another chance to win me over, but for now, 3/5 is the best I can do. When all cylinders are hitting, this place is great. Their inconsistency is a drawback, though.

I've been here a few times, and the food is always on point. As other people have mentioned, I've had some small issues with waiting for a table, but I'm pretty used to it with most places. I don't see it as a big deal. There's usually a good environment with patrons, which is one reason I really like this place. They also support a number of local causes. I got a $10 gift-certificate here from a local middle school. If you're thinking about dining here, I highly recommend checking out the store at goboostershot.com . You can get a $10 gift-certificate while supporting a great local cause. It's definitely a win-win situation.

Why isn't Country House closer to me? I live in the city, but if I am going to be anywhere near Country House I make it a point to have lunch there. Their half pound burgers and reubens are the best I have had anywhere. When you ask for medium, you get medium. The onion rings are great. Prices are reasonable. It's supposed to be haunted. They usually have a tasty sounding dessert, today was banana chocolate chip cake, but I never leave enough room.

Yum love. Never had a bad meal at this neighborhood icon! So glad they're nearby. Free peanuts at the bar. Best ostrich burgers. Love chicken cashew salad!!

At 6:30pm on a Tuesday night this place was pretty crowded. Wait was about 30 minutes to get a table which ended up being in the bar area. They have some TVs behind the bar if your interested in catching a game. The server was attentive and nice. The busboys were also quick to pickup plates and bring to-go containers. Liquor was reasonably priced. I saw signs for beer specials on certain days. The food was decent. We had fish and chips, fried shrimp, and the filet sandwich.

My family and I have been going to The Country House for years. #1 Burger by far! If you like a cozy, small environment (this location used to be an actual house), then you will find this place very charming. The wait staff is very friendly and efficient. I have never had a bad experience. Be prepared for long waits at the dinner rush time and not comfortable areas to stand and wait - but it is worth it for the charm and food. Also, for those into ghost hunting....I've heard it's haunted :).

One of my favorite hamburgers in Illinois, steak fries are delicious too. I've been going to the Country House ever since I was a kid. I remember when there were rumors that it was haunted, I never saw the ghosts though.

We went here because they were on some "best burgers in Chicago" list we found. The burgers did not disappoint.

When your server tells you that your top two choices, which also happen to be specials are horrible, where do you go? This was my second trip to The Country House, and I was unimpressed the first time. This time was downright depressing. Our waitress told us a lot of people liked the fried chicken, but that it was bad. She also claimed that the ribs were more bone than meat, and the meat did not even come close to falling off the bone. When my husband asked what he should order instead, she looked around and vaguely stated that everything else was good. He ordered the fried chicken, and it was not impressive. I ordered the vegetarian southwest wrap, and it was okay. The best item that I ordered was their homemade Shandy. It was a smooth balance of sweet, lemon, and beer. However, it would not get me to come back.

First of all do not listen to idiot yelpers on here like the girl that came here for drinks and gave it one star because the DRINK prices were too high. She didn't even eat the food!!!! Then I see another idiot that trashed on this place because of the line and a soggy bun. Please it has a long line because it is good and people like it idiot!! Not the restaurant's fault. The bun was soggy because the burger is flowing with juices idiot! Now on to the food. I have been coming here since I was a kid, and I love the burgers, the hype is real. They use good quality beef and they cook it just right so it is juicy and delicious! The onion rings are awesome and they have a really good buffalo burger. Their cole slaw is still the best I have ever had at any restaurant to date. The Spinich dip is creamy and rich with flavor.

I came here last week after a night of hanging out with friends. First the mozzarella sticks are amazing. Yes, I know I just wrote that. Because you think how easy are they to make, they must be universal. Well this place does something that makes them delicious. Yes try the mozzarella sticks. I had the buffalo burger and it was delicious. My only problem was it was so good and tasted so much like a real burger that... But the buffalo burger was great. It came with steamed veggies which were also quite good. It definitely has a country feel and an old school atmosphere. But the burger was delicious, everyone was happy with their meal. I want to go back and try the other "health" foods they have. I would definitely go back, just not sure when I will be back in the neighborhood.

This place is just not that good. May have some attraction be a use of the history. Dry burger, tasteless fish and chips. Do not recommend even trying once.

Appetizer specials. Poblano poppers. Awesome service. I can come up with more two word sentences for this place, but it may be better for a more descriptive review. So my gf, her brother, his gf, and I wanted to go out for AYCE king crab, but due to a power outage, the original restaurant was out of the question. Instead, we finally decided on The Country House. I am not a fan of the supernatural and the fact that this place is supposedly haunted, but since I did not drive I did not mind... much. Anyways, I'm glad we went because first and foremost service was excellent from the bartender to our waitress. From the bartender I learned about a new drink after he took my original drink order. Waitress was just on top of things with the waters and how she took care of us. Food itself was good. We came close to 9 and were able to get the $3 appetizer specials. Here are the food items that we ordered and I tried. Poblano poppers: The clear winner of all the apps and a new item to their menu. Maybe it's because they're different that I liked it so much, but our whole table liked these. Duck Tenders: These were also different. Not bad... they were decent. The sauce that this came with was really good. Jalapeno Poppers: Tastes like jalapeno poppers, but you can tell they're fresh because of the snap of the jalapenos. Chili: I ordered this for myself although it's an app. Very good and has nice spice to it. Ask for sour cream with it. Delish. Spinach and Artichoke Dip: Pita was a little off somehow, but good. Unlike other artichoke dips this one did't feel as bad for you. It was more cream cheese like for consistency too. Kentucky Bourbon Steak: Gf got this and she liked it. I thought it was really good too. I just finished reading about the ghost here after looking at their website. Pretty scary, but with food and service this good we'll be back again with our group.

Went this past Friday evening, arrived a little after 6pm and didn't get seated until about 7pm. Waited in the bar, they passed some spinach/artichoke dip around... that was a nice touch. I was underwhelmed by the food, I ordered the salmon on ciabatta; it was dry. Tasted the muffaletta, that was okay... others in the party ordered burgers, no complaints yet no raves... a salad that was okay... and the tilapia sandwich, that was good. Honestly my favorite part was the fries and the sauce they served with the sandwich. Price wise, it's okay... there were six of us and we each had a drink with the bill coming in about $110.

Country House is a landmark in Clarendon Hills with quite a story behind it. It is considered to be haunted by a visitor killed in a car crash nearby many decades ago. The exterior of the building is very dark and spooky, like an old barn. The inside is also pretty eerie. In terms of food, the hot pastrami sandwich is by far the best item on the menu. It is so rich that eating the whole thing is a challenge. The hot pastrami is served on a thick pretzel bun with a side of Honey Dijon mayonnaise. The Honey Dijon mayonnaise is essential; it really adds to the sandwich. The burgers are quite good too--juicy and charred just enough on the surface. This Country House is a great neighborhood place--and a must-see for ghost hunters!

Food 3 stars service 5 stars!!! Tips: Certain appetizers are $3 Every day between 2:00 - 4:30 and 9:00pm - Close. $3.99 Naked Burger - Sun through Thur night after 9:00 pm and Fri & Sat night after 10:00 pm enjoy a full sized Country Burger without any sides We ordered all the $3 appetizers. The duck tenders were a bit dry and not so tasty. The poblano bites were different and a bit spicier than the jalapeno poppers. I ordered the Kentucky Bourbon steak. It was really good. The meat was not too tough and the sauce complimented the steak well. The clam chowder soup was a little too watery for me, but the taste up on point. I didn't really care for the spinach and artichoke dip. The dip wasn't really cheesy, it was more of a cream cheese consistency. The pita bread that came with it was a little too soft. I was bummed that they ran out of the dessert. Would have liked to try it! We also ordered the $3.99 burger and it was huge. Awesome value for a late night burger! It's very hard to find a place with exceptional service. Our waitress was awesome. She made sure our waters were always full, checked on us throughout the evening, friendly, and was prompt every time we asked for something. I couldn't have asked for a better waitress!

Husband and I went here on a Sunday early evening after a round of golf in the burbs. Parking lot was pretty crowded and was told that the wait would be around 30 min. We ended up waiting at the bar - $3.50 Miller Lite bottle or draft special......score! The bar was packed but the bartender was able to serve us quickly - no hassles. To our surprise we were sat after about 20 min. The decor was very old school with wood paneling. I had not come here since my high school days but remembered that the food was decent. Menu is pretty basic but hearty. I went for the buffalo burger, husband went for the regular burger. Waitress was very friendly and kept pace when my husband ordered more beer. Our food came out pretty fast and had no complaints on the food. Overall the eating experience was good (in the burbs) and would definitely come out again. Reminded me of a Hackney's where you get classic home food without the pretentiousness. Reasonably priced as well. I would recommend this restaurant based on the area if you want to avoid the chains!

Order the onion soup with swiss or you may be disappointed. It comes with monterey jack or some other cheese that is wholly unsuited. Don't expect it to come truly baked but the test is really excellent. I enjoyed my burger and the onion rings were great. My wife got the Tuesday special 12 oysters for $6 and really enjoyed them. Great beer choice and a resident ghost to boot! I like this place.

Went there with friends and we were all impressed with the burgers, cooked how we requested. I had the potato salad-excellent. The others had steak fries and onion rings. All was gone by the end of the meal. We totally enjoyed the food and our server was very attentive. Only negative was that it was soooo dim in there it's a bit hard to read the menu. FYI: about half of the restaurant is bar, half dining. Not handicapped accessible.

We ate there about 2 months ago (I'm catching up on reviews) and I honestly don't remember what I ordered for dinner. There were four in our party and I know what everyone else had.... Veggie burger- one of the best according to the one who ordered it Regular burger- decent according to carnivore #1 Potroast special of the day- no comment but the plate was wiped absolutely spotless by carnivore #2 I don't remember my dinner because all I can remember is dessert. THE BEST CHEESECAKE. EVER. Unfortunately carnivore #2 had eaten too much to try dessert, but the rest of us all agreed that as far as regular cheesecake goes this was the absolutely best cheesecake all of us had ever had. Now, about every week since then we joke about going in and just ordering cheesecake but we haven't gotten back there yet as we tend to like to eat a whole meal out and are still trying new places since moving to Westmont a couple months ago. But we will be ferrying any out of town guests this way, ghosts or no ghosts.

I had the Burger and it was great. Fiance had muffalota and said it was great as well. Onion rings are not homemade taste like store bought frozen but other than that nice place would come back

The last time I was at CH was Halloween 2010 and it was a nice place to have dinner. This last time was a non-holiday Tuesday and the place was packed in spite of the road construction making it difficult to even get to the place. After a 45 minute wait that ended in with a table in the bar, the sandwich I had (Ruben) was dry and my husband's cheese burger was over cooked to the point of burnt. I am not even going to go into any details about the couple at the bar; the woman was sitting on the man's lap and licking his face. Our waitress was the only thing that was right about this evening. We won't be back for a while.

I have eaten here dozens of times and it's a good place for a burger or just to chill with your friends. So the Country House has an award winning burger so that's kind of what you should have in mind if you come here. They have beef burgers but also other meats such as Ostrich, Bison, and Turkey. Out of those Bison and Turkey are my favorite. The burger is usually cooked how I like it and it comes with big steak fries which are good but sometimes taste too potato-y if you know what I mean. Is it the best burger around? In my opinion, no. But it's a good burger nonetheless. The environment is nice (think old tavern, dark, and there's some story the place is haunted too). There is a nice beer selection and I usually sit at a bar table so I can watch the game. Service is nice and quick. Sometimes it will be up to an hour wait for a table if they are really busy. The crowd is usually older (40+) and the bar area is louder but usually more "interesting". All-in-all it's a great local restaurant and I recommend it.

I was intrigued to know that this place was haunted, as I've been visiting haunted locations since I was old enough to pee by myself. However, after discovering this place years ago--I always told myself I would stop in here. I got this chance because a friend of mine lives 2 minutes from the place. We stopped in yesterday just to check it out, and boy was it fun. The bar had a cozy, crunchy atmosphere to it. Crunchy, you're wondering? There's sea of peanut shells that will greet you under your feet--but don't let that fool you, this place is wonderful. Not only are the beers here priced well, but they give you peanuts at the bar to eat and you can throw the shells on the floor. Although we went at a down time, the staff was very friendly, and we even got to ask about their ghost that haunts the location. We didn't get to eat any of their food, although I've heard good things. I will say I'm definitely going to come back with a group soon. The Country House left a good impression on a couple of first timers; I would definitely go if you had the chance.

We came on a Sunday about 5:15 pm. Getting crowded but we got a table right away. The service was excellent, from the hostess, to a knowledgeable and efficient waitress to the busboys. Quick service but we were not rushed. Shout out to the busboy Alex who helped us out beyond the call of duty. The food was all very good. And there is a nice selection of beers. I was going to try one named Moose Drool but passed because I wasn't in the mood for a stout. Maybe next time. We did enjoy the Bell's Oberon and the Ginger Shandy. We had four different sandwiches. The hamburger on dark rye was very good and cooked as requested. The turkey burger on a pretzel bun was excellent, exceptionally juicy. The turkey stack was very good and tasty. The muffuletta, prepared like a panini, was unique and excellent. And the steak fries and onion rings were very good. One negative: the feet on a couple of the chairs need fixing. They caused the chairs to be uneven and rock.

Ok so I was finally able to check out The Country House awhile back and I really liked it. I was not expecting it to be soooo small inside BUT I like the little bar area! Low lighting, peanuts on the table = toss shells on the floor. Sweet!! Large boars head over the wall that the fireplace is on. Happy the seats had backs to them! Great beer selection if you are a beer drinker. I love my wine and mixed drinks. :) I ordered the Buffalo burger with some cheddar cheese on an awesome pretzel roll. Mmm pretzel rolls!! Pretty good burger I have to say. Great fat steak fries as well. Fun place to hang with friends and to get to know the locals. I can tell there are many regulars there which is pretty cool. Popular place for sure! You have to go during the week or EARLY evening. If you don't then you can forget parking spot. One time I wanted to go there was ZERO parking so I had to leave. :( The one down thing was super TINY restrooms and a little too warm temp wise. Other then that good food and good tunes in the bar. I will def go back to try other items and to check out the daily specials. Cheers!

Sadness! More two stars! :( This place is touted as having the best burger in Chicagoland. As a fan of Edzo's, Montana Ted's, and the Yardhouse, I'll have to disagree. I had the regular burger on a pretzel roll with cheddar cheese, and a half order of onion rings and steak fries. It was okay. The burger was a little dry, and was not medium rare. It was definitely more well-done than I like. The bun was also a disappointment, but maybe I'm used to Leona's *divine* pretzel buns of deliciousness. The onion rings weren't my style (not batter dipped, the crusty kind), and the fries reminded me of the fries I used to get in the college cafeteria. The wait was long to get in, there wasn't a really good place to stand to wait, so we were in the way of the servers, which I hate. I hate feeling like I'm interfering with people trying to do their jobs. *sigh* Oh, and again with the squeezed-in-like-sardines thing! The acoustics are terrible, you can't hear your table-mates, and you are cheek-to-jowl with other diners, which makes me uncomfortable. It's also not great for anyone who has mobility issues. It's dark, the floor is uneven, and there is not a good path to any table, really. I wouldn't go back on my own, but my friends really like the place, so I'll probably be back anyway. I'll have to try the patty-melt style burger. That may be up my alley, and I'll have to check back in.

Originally planned on going to Vincitori in Westmont, but they were closed, probably because it was Labor Day weekend. My wife and I pass by here all the time, but had never eaten here. Too bad for us. The food is very good. I had the fried chicken special (something I would seldom order) and it was 4 big, meaty, juicy, flavorful pieces. My wife had the walleye, also fried, and that was really delicious, too. A very nice portion, coated in pretzel crumbs and fried. The salad is pretty ordinary, just iceburg and a few vegetable garnish, so we'll have to try some of the other sides next time. We'll be heading back again.

A favorite place to hang out with friends. Open late, and as long as you've ordered food or drinks, they don't care if you stay until closing. Lots of great beers on tap, full bar, and the food is delicious. Voted best burger around for a reason. Hot and greasy, just the way a good burger is supposed to be! If you're not into that or counting calories, get the buffalo burger. Tastes great but kind of dry because of the lower fat content - don't get this one well done. Great streak fries and onion rings - they're happy to give you half and half with your burger. Good cole slaw on the side, but you usually have to ask for it. Had the cheesy artichoke dip once and it was sinful, so creamy! Great homemade soups and desserts too. Now, it's a scary looking building from the outside as it is, but knowing the ghost story makes it even creepier! I've probably been here 12-15 times, often after 10pm when it's almost empty. Usually nothing happens...though something about their ladies room always freaks me out. Seriously, I get a really uncomfortable feeling just opening the door. However, one night that my ghost-loving friend and I were there, things got weird. It sounded like someone was moving furniture around upstairs...at midnight. The swinging door to the kitchen was kinda moving in these weird little jerks, then it would fly open or slam shut. We watched that door for an hour! There was a weird thumping/humming noise at times, and when it was loudest the lights would dim. Now, we've been there a lot, as I've said. They never really play up the ghost thing, it's just on the back of the menu really. Something about this night was different. Even the waitress, one we had seen several times before, seemed freaked out. She said the kitchen door was moving because they had an outside door open for trash take out and deliveries, but she didn't seem too sure of herself. We'd been there many other times at closing and never seen the door move like that. Every time the lights dimmed, she looked up at the ceiling too. She seemed really distracted. Honestly it was kinda scary and SUPER FUN!!!

I have been going to the Country House since they opened. (35 years ago) I can honestly say I never had a bad meal there. The service is always good and the food will never let you down. They are well known for their burgers, but really everything on the menu is good.

Just a warning to any families with kids thinking about heading to this mathematically-challenged establishment for a kid-friendly night on the town. I recognize this is small sample size, since this was my first (and last) time at Country House, but I arrived at the seemingly-family-friendly-time of 5:15PM and was told that the wait for a 4 person table (me, wife, 3.5 year old, 7 month old) would be 35 minutes**. This wait wouldn't be an issue, except for the fact that there is no age-appropriate place for a child of any age to wait...basically you are waiting in the packed-with-patrons-peanuts-and-beer bar, or you are outside (this particular night it was 15 degrees outside, so maybe the 2-star review is only appropriate for the winter months). Anyway, after 30 minutes of complaint-free waiting, I returned to the waitress station for an update, only to be told that the Country House Delorean had transported me back to the exact time we'd entered the restaurant, because the wait was still 35 minutes. At that point we left, so I can't really offer much of an opinion on their food (thus the 2-star instead of 1-star review). I recognize that Country House is not necessarily catering to families of four on a Saturday night, so perhaps I should not be surprised by their lack of sympathy to a couple of parents who are just trying to enjoy what we've been told is a great burger at a local restaurant. But bottom line, if you're a parent, you know within seconds of entering a restaurant whether they are family friendly or whether they would rather set a minimum age requirement at the door. Country House most certainly falls into the latter category. ** Technically the lady at the server desk originally mumbled "five minutes" under her breath while walking away from me. I had to wait for her to return and ask again what she'd said to clarify that the official time was thirty five minutes. P.S. Lest you think I am an easily embittered restaurant patron, I'd just like to state for the record this is the first (and hopefully last) time I've ever posted on this site.

Great burgers! Let's start there. Everything appears to be good here, especially the soups and onion rings. I had a country burger on a pretzel bun. Though it was good, I think I'll go back to my patty melt style burger on dark Bavarian rye! Delicious. Best patty melt I've ever had. They sear the burgers to keep the juices inside. They also offer ostrich and bison burgers as well. The steak sandwich is good. The chicken nuggets from the kids menu is real chicken and not frozen nuggets. The food quality is top-notch and the line into this place proves it. Expect to wait. Everytime I come here, it's at least a twenty minute wait. Well, once I sat down right away when we got here at 9:30. They do serve the best burger in the area and I really don't remember having a better burger anywhere else. Great, dark ambiance with a log cabin feel. They have a few beers you won't see in most restaurants, but they definitely don't have an extensive list of beers to choose from. Probably around 10-15 beers to pick from, including your standard drafts. It's a little disappointing given the size of the bar and the atmosphere of the place. However, the food and the atmosphere is A+.

It doesn't matter if you are a regular or you have never been here before. The staff treats you like family. (Not the Italian kind that yells and screams at you) The good kind that give you a beer and makes sure you are fed. The pulled pork is still awsome and the service is right on the money. If this place was closer I would make it my regular watering hole!

Yes, this is the place that has a reputation for having the best burger AND being HAUNTED. The burgers are good, although we are talking basic burger here -- for example, they just added Pepper Jack cheese to the menu choices... This ain't no pretzel bun, stilton bleu cheese, applewood bacon --kinda "best burger" joint -- know what I mean? But they do offer some choices in the type of meat -- like buffalo and ostrich... And about the haunting -- there's a ghost that lives upstairs. I'm not sure how you get up there to meet the ghost, but I guess if you drive by you can see it looking out the windows sometimes.

I highly recommend the duck tenders and the burgers the beer is excellent the red river ale is the house tap and it is amazing. There is a great variety of beer and wine to choose from. And they also make their food towards health-conscious consumers. Always a great place to go no matter what and between 2 PM and 5 PM and 9 PM till closing it's half-price appetizers and hamburgers

This place is great! We have been coming here for over 20 years. We never have had a bad meal, but as others have mentioned, it's a tight fit inside. It's not very large and the squeeze the tables in. Not really your best bet for intimate night out. But if you're okay with that then enjoy some unique food. My favorites are the muffaletta and the ostrich burger.

I love the Country House for many reasons! Its so cozy you feel as if your dining in someone home! The fireplace has a big stuffed Boars head above it, just like my fathers basement...terrifying, the staff is mellow and friendly. Just a great place to chill with friends. You can even discard your empty peanut shells on the floor! When I was a meat eater, sorry world, I would crave the buffalo burgers, sorry buffalos, they were fantastic! Cant not mention the coleslaw! The beer on tap is awesome too! Many selections! Country House also has some spooky history...said to be haunted by a young woman! Im not giving out details GO there and see for yourself!

Average. Burger was somewhat bland and overrated. Though my girlfriend's "Fire Burger" was really good. BLT soup was pretty terrible. More like beer cheese soup with tomato chunks. I might go again, but it won't be for a while

I am not a huge burger person (they make my butt blow up) but they had ostrich burgers (super lean) on rye bread (yum!). Oh, and they were done on a charcoal grill! Throw in a side of fresh vegetables and I was in heaven - finally, an awesome burger that I don't feel guilty about! Note: if you're claustrophobic, probably not the place for you. They max out their seating capacity ...it's a little tight.

We ventured to this place after hearing some good reviews and a coupon worth $5. They were surprisingly really busy, had to wait 20 minutes for a table on a Wen. I had the Buffalo burger with cole slaw and the cream of mushroom soup for an appetizer. They were all good and was happy with my order. I especially liked the soup! My wife had the steak and bake potato with chilli for appetizer. She especially liked the Chilli! Her steak was a little over cooked, wanted it medium-well. We will debate coming back, it was good but nothing really stood out and in this area there are so many choices, will have to think hard about a return.

The menu is the same at all three of their restaurants but this location is our favorite. I have never had a bad meal here. The hamburgers are the best and theyhave awards to prove it. It is dark and cramped. The servers are professional and know there stuff. ASK for their frequent diner card. The daily specials are good also! Not cheap but truly good food. We didn't see any ghosts on this visit, ask about it!

I like this place because it serves Comfort Food in a comfortable atmosphere. I don't like to other Country Houses because they lost the ambiance. I find myself going there more in the winter months because the food is so heavy and the dining room and bar have the feel of a lodge in the North Woods. Although Tuesday night oyster specials has it on my to-do list. It's also a place you don't mind waiting for a table while enjoying drinks and eating peanuts (then throwing the shells on the floor). If you are in hurry and not looking to relax, go somewhere else.

Quaint. That was the word my boyfriend used for this place. Not only because it's perfect for this cozy little restaurant, but because.. well, it's a fun word to say. We went on a Thursday night around 8pm. The parking lot was full and the smell permeating from the building almost made my stomach jump out and race me in. There was a wait (about 25 mins.) I don't mind waiting, but it was cold out so we didn't want to wait outside. The bar was full, so we were crammed in the tiny entryway crunching with every move on peanut shells. When we were seated the server was very friendly and prompt. Our food came surprisingly fast too for how busy they were. Appetizer to food arrival was perfect as well. I ordered the mushroom jack veggie burger. It was good, but the bun was super soggy. I hate soggy bread. I ended up dissecting it with my fork. The onion rings were some of the best I've ever had. The boyfriend ordered the ostrich burger and had no complaints. The spinach artichoke appetizer was amazing. Very flavorful and comes with soft pita triangles. The beer selection is decent which is a plus! All in all, good service, good food, average prices, *quaint* atmosphere. Minus one star for awkward wait. Minus one star for soggy buns.... We will be back.

The burgers are great! The side dishes and ambience is also really cool. The only drawback is having to wait for extended periods of time due to huge crowds, and sometimes you get stuck in uncomfortable seats. But when you eat your burger, it is all worth it...

You wanna know why I like this place? I grew up in a small town, and this reminds me of the type of restaurant you'd head to in the boonies of Wisconsin or Illinois. Your typical Midwest establishment. Sorta place that makes you feel comfortable immediately. Drinks are reasonably priced - $4-5 range. You can throw peanuts on the floor. Decent homemade soups. Sort of a meat and potatoes place. Want a hunk of meat on a bun? They have great burgers, almost all under $10. Fries are average, Onion rings are pretty tasty. One of the best places in the area for a burger and a relaxing, unpretentious evening out. I'd even feel comfortable wearing a sweatshirt here, ala small town style.

Since discovering this place, my husband and I have visited every Saturday night after work. It's so fun to look forward to - the peanuts, beer selection, appetizers and amazing sandwiches. The nostalgiac atmosphere is reminiscent of parties our parents hosted, and the staff is quick, kind, and cool. Love this place to pieces.

The ambiance is wonderful but it is darker inside. The food was good and pletiful. The only complaint I had was that my steak was overdone but the staff was helpful in correcting this.

My B/F and I are regulars here. I usually get a South West Chicken Wrap or a Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll. My B/F loves the burgers here. The Staff is super friendly. Some of the staff have their own stories about their encounters with the ghost. This is like the only place open late in the burbs (that's not a chain). This would have been a 5 star review except for the 2 different types of music. The bar plays different music then the sitting area. I don't know Y that is. I wish they would just play the bar music though out the place.

My parents and boyfriend live in the neighborhood so it's a great place to go to when I'm visiting. My boyfriend and I went last night and it was pretty crowded at 6pm on a Thursday. By 7:30 when we'd finished it was PACKED! That was my only complainent. We sat in the bar ordered a few beers and had some peanuts. The bartender was AMAZING. She's attentive, down to earth, and a whole lot of fun! We ordered some dinner as well. My bf had the bison burger which he loved and I had the BBQ pork sliders. They were very good as well. This is just a great place to go.

We went in to watch the Bull's game in the bar. We waited about 20-25 min for a seat to open in the bar area (no problem with that). When a seat finally opened up, my wife and I sat at a table (in the bar), ready to order dinner and enjoy the game. About 5 min. after we sat down the hostess said "this table is reserved for my dinner guests." We let her know that we would be having dinner. She asked us to leave the table as she had guests to seat there. She then sat people who arrived 15 min. after us (I know this because we waited patiently BY THE DOOR for 25 min.). My wife and I left and will never return.

My husband & I eat here periodically on Friday nights and have never had a bad food or service experience. Definitely a consistent 5 star rating from us. At this time I am writing not about the food, but to commend the exceptional customer service recently provided by Lynn (not sure about the spelling), General Manager. I had lost a small credit card wallet, but wasn't sure where I had lost it or if it had been stolen. I called several places, and no one had turned it in. However, a little over a week later, Lynn contacted me to say she had the wallet. It had been found by their cleaning crew. Other than my name on the credit cards, there was no other identification such as a phone or address. She spent considerable time going through their customer list, and local phone directories, making phone calls until she reached me. Very impressive that she would make the effort. Kudos also to the cleaning crew who turned it in with nothing missing. We will definitely continue to return to Country House!

Fun, fun place. Since I have moved away, this is the place I miss most. I'd hit the bar coming home from work, 1AM, Stan the bartender and night manager (hi, Stan) would make a great Long Island and I'd sleep like a baby (after a short safe drive home)-As for off days, a burger with potato salad. Nice, not overdone, fairly large and juicy, one of the best in Chicago area. Despite being a New Orleans resident (OK I was 5), I never had a muffaletta until Country House, and it is GOOD...so I guess you can't go wrong here. It does get busy, very busy in the 6-8PM time, so be ready to wait, but enjoy the great atmosphere.

i have literally lived around the block to this place for years. was scared off by the ghost rumours as a child (hahah) but many years later ventured in for a burger. peanut shells all over the bar to me was crazy. maybe i'm just sheltered in my little bubble. ah suburbia. A+ for the food quality. their menu is simple. it's bar food. why complicate things? these people know what they do right, and continue to do it. my pick: burger on pretzel bun w some swiss & onion rings (if that doesn't lure you in, i don't know what will) parking lot is almost always full, but hello! just park on a street nearby to the place or something. it's clarendon hills for crying out loud. no one will mind.

What used to be one of my favorite places in the burbs to grab a burger, seems to have gone down hill over the past two years. The Country House is like one of those places that you only find in Wisconsin. Dark bar, peanuts on the floor, old hunting prints and 70's furniture. There is a bit of history that this place is haunted and you can read about the ghost on the back of the menu. I've never seen it but then it's always packed when I am there, not conducive to a shy ghost coming out! This used to be the place on Tuesday nights, where you could get all the fresh shucked oysters that you could eat for only a quarter each. The price has now risen to 50 cents each- still good but not like a year or so ago. I think that they have also put a 2 dozen limit on them as well. I went here for dinner last Saturday and was told that there would be a wait of 45 minutes to sit in the no smoking section, but that high tops were available in the bar. We took our chances that there would be little smoke and grabbed one of the tables. Our waitress was pleasant, even going so far as to wish me a Happy Mother's Day (not necessarily appropriate given I have no kids, but I give her an A for effort). We ordered a couple of fried appetizers (mushrooms and some type of stuffed shrimp) They were good. Our food came next and I have to say that I was disappointed in my dinner. I ordered the fish and chips which used to be small pieces of fried fish served with these great fries. What came was one big piece of fried fish and a pile of re-fried fries that tasted like the oil in the fryer. How disappointing since a friend I was with ordered the same on my recommendation! Nothing worse than acknowledging the calories that fried foods contain and then not even having it be good! My suggestion? If you go- opt for the burger. I've never been disappointed with that. As for the fries- since they have changed and not for the better, the onion rings are a better choice. Maybe a better choice altogether is just to go for a cold one and throw some peanuts on the floor. Not too much that could go wrong with that!

I really like the food here, and the ghost story is pretty cool, but if you are here with friends it's really hard to carry on a conversation as the place is always crowded and noisy and the tables are very close together. Not exactly the best place for intimate dinners.

It is nice to be able to get back to one of my favorite western chicago suburban restaruants now that ILLINOIS has outlawed smoking in eating establishments. Honestly, smoking and poor ventilation was the only reason we elected to pass on it. The food here is exceptional. The burgers are as touted; very good. One issue...the tables in the bar. You can't sit there after six oclock if you're not eating. The bar is always full, so good luck getting a seat there and there is no standing room, frankly. But, that's just tough luck...not to take away from a wonderful place. Now, if management would discourage the smokers from hovering around the front door and remind them that State Law requires they be at least 15 feet away from the entrance, it will be five stars. One of the oldest restaurants in DuPage County is Country House in Clarendon Hills. It has been through a few different owners and renovations but it has endured. This place is practically a landmark. Standing on the corner of Clarendon Hills road and 55th street it's watched countless cars travel under that blinking yellow light hanging over the intersection. They even have a ghost that likes to haunt the place. (if you believe in ghosts) As far as I can remember this place has been crowded. Partly because of it's tight quarters, but it does bring in the customers. As a child I remember sitting at the heavy wood table with the u-shaped wood arm chairs. Smoke filled the room from people smoking cigarettes in the bar (as it was allowed back then) and you could hardly hear yourself over the din. Chairs were back to back and it seemed like you couldn't pull your chair in far enough, but the room was always happy. People talked to each other about their days while putting back a beer and waiting for there food. Most everyone always had a smile on their face. The same is still true today. While the crowd in the bar may have changed over to a younger generation (it's become a hangout for the post college, working age group) the dining room looks to be full with folk who have enjoyed the place for years. So Melissa and I decided to go back. We hadn't been there in years, not that we didn't try, the place is always packed. We had been to the one in Lisle, but it's just not the same. This is the original and it's the place to be. The first thing you notice is the aroma floating around the building. OK, it's the second. The first is that the parking lot is full, but as for the fragrance, I swear they pump out the char-grill burger smell into the parking lot. My mouth was watering before I even closed the door to my truck. The next thing is that there is no waiting space inside. You just squeeze up to a wall and wait your turn, but no one seems to be complaining about it. We were seated after 15 minutes or so, and the waitress was prompt. One of the things I remember form my childhood was their French Onion Soup. I'm glad I remembered. It was loaded with sweet onions and big fat croutons and covered with melted with gruyere cheese. AWESOME! Now it was time for the burger. Traditionally I always got the Country House Burger, then for a while i would get the bison, but I was going back to tradition. The Country House Burger is a half pound of USDA choice ground chuck cooked the way you like. It's served with lettuce, tomato, and a pickle. You get your choice of steak fried, onion rings or potato salad. They'll even give you raw or grilled onions and cole slaw on request. I totally forgot about the coleslaw. I wish I remembered, I loved that stuff. Then you get a choice of bun. You get to choose from a sesame bun, light rye bread, or Bavarian dark rye bread. I have always gotten the dark rye, and looking around the place it seems to be the bun of choice. Now if I were the owner I would have the rye breads toasted, but sometimes tradition steps in and overrules logic. They just use bread right out of the bag. It gets a bit soggy and falls apart easily, but this is the way it has always been done. It's not really a sticking point with me. the burger is delicious anyway. This seems to be one of the difficult areas of reviewing burgers. I need to separate my specific taste from the taste that has worked for years, and not let something like regular rye bread stand in the way of what is otherwise an outstanding burger. This trip really brought back memories. Even though they're not using the metal plates any more, and the egg shaped candle holders have been replaced by electric candles, they still hold true to the tradition established decades before. And that is to put together a tasty burger in a friendly atmosphere and to keep watch over the intersection of Clarendon Hills Road and 55th street... with its yellow flashing light. You can check out the menu, and the ghost story at www. burgerone.com

My girlfriend and I loved the Country House. The restaurant resembles a large cottage, so it wasn't the easiest to notice on the drive up. However, after seeing the sign, we swung around and parked in the large lot behind the restaurant. We arrived at around 4:30pm on a Friday and the place was half packed. We were pleasantly surprised, though I will admit that the restaurant isn't very large. The decor is very rustic, with a large bar, fireplace, stuffed boar head, peanuts at every table and a scattering of peanut shells on the floor. The background music is very appropriate as well. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the menu was rather extensive for a bar. We didn't order any appetizers, since we heard the burgers were rather large. We did order a round though, and the beer selection was great. The prices were very affordable and came in appropriate glassware. The burgers were fabulous! The quality of the meat was exceptional, they were cooked perfectly and the cheese section was impressive. I went with the bleu cheese, and very much enjoyed it. The side of onion rings were great as well. The bill for three burgers and a round a drinks came out to around $50, which given the quality, was a great deal. If there is one thing that concerns me about the Country House is the size of the restaurant. As we were leaving at around 5:45 pm, there was a line for seating. So, if you want to give the place a shot, make sure you go early. But once you sit down, you will not be disappointed.

As much as i love the food here, i have to say i was disappointed when going there on my 21st birthday. i was outraged that one beer, one whiskey on the rocks and a coke for my boyfriend was just under $15. maybe i'm spoiled by the bars in summit where i usually drink, but holy shit come on. as to their haunting, i've never experienced anything, even though i tend to be more open to those sorts of things, and think it might just be an urban legend.

This is one of those places that for the life of me I cannot understand why so many people love it....I spent years hearing about it and when I finally got there I was like really?! it's cramped, you are practically on the laps of the people at the tables next to you, the food is just OK/so -so, and the female bartenders were outright rude to female patrons and gave them poor service that seemed blatant and on purpose. The waitresses were nice and did their best with what they had to work with. SO not worth the long waits....and I gave it 3 chances since I moved to the area. Even though I now live very close, I will still drive right past and go elsewhere.

I went here for the bufallo burger, as I always seek them out when I am on the road and craving meat. It's healthy and low fat. Theirs is served on bread (weird) and the sides were kind of weak. Overall it was just OK, though the burger patty was probably 4 stars.

My family and I have been coming here for at least 30 years and its ALWAYS been awesome. I was just there this past weekend for the first time in awhile and its still TOPS. Best burgers in the burbs by far (and maybe the city). But I have pretty much everything on the menu at some point over the years and have yet to have a bad meal. Great atmosphere and personable service. Can't go wrong with the Country House.

The Country House is one of the top Clarendon Hills restaurants. It was even recently chose as "Chicago's Favorite Burger" by readers of the Chicago Tribune. The rustic feel of the restaurant fits in perfectly with cuisine and laid back setting. The house itself was constructed by Emil Kobel in 1922, and has been a focal point of Clarendon Hills ever since. Of course, visitors should try the "Country Burger" which is the hallmark of the menu. The Country House also boasts a full service bar to supplement its juicy cuisine. The beer selection is excellent with 8 beers on tap and a great bottled selection. Daily specials insure that the menu is ever changing including 50 cent oysters every Tuesday.

last time I was here was over a year ago but loved the ambiance and the food. country house is known for their burgers, I had the ostrich burger. it tasted like beef. it was delicious. it's dark and cozy and there was a wait, I do remember. this place is popular. it's a peanut shells on the floor kinda joint and we'll be planning a trip back soon. i forgot how tasty it was!

We went here to try "Chicago's Favorite Burger". Apparently we and Chicago disagree. Not horrible, but nothing to return for. The service was fine. It's a dim, creaky, cluttered, dusty restaurant with a very loyal following, apparently for reasons that we did not discover on our visit.

It has been over 20 years since we've been here. Memories recall very good food, crowded tables, and cigarette smoke saturating the air. I smoked at the time and thought the smoky haze was a bit thick, even for me, a heavy smoker, at the time. Things do change. No more smoke in the air and I have long ago quit. The restaurant is still busy. The tables are so close to each other that if you stretch, you may poke someone's eyes out. But the food is good. I seem to recall more steaks on the menu years ago. There were very few this time. The restaurant is more like a pub than a bar & steak place. There is plenty of food on the menu and we ordered the buffalo burger. The menu says its locally grown buffalo. Of course, buffalo is the wrong word for bison, but few people get it right. Who cares! The burger was very good. The onion rings we ordered were decent. The pickles were very salty. The Country House Red Ale was pretty thirst-quenching and just right for washing down a burger. And the price is very reasonable. I think it will be less than 20 years before we return again.

Pretty good burgers. Huge plus for variety (beef, buffalo, ostrich, turkey, etc.). And they have beer specials. And you can throw peanut shells on the floor. :) My friend got the buffalo burger with fries, and I got the ostrich with onion rings (so we could split onion rings and fries). A little skimpy on the onion rings, and my friend got cold slaw and a pickle, and I didn't! Not sure if the cook didn't like ostrich burgers or what., so that was a little bit of a bummer. But it was still pretty good food-wise.

A great place if you find yourself in the suburbs on a Sunday afternoon, in need of a cold beer and perhaps a burger. One time, they had a Stella Artois promotion, and we went home with glassware! Nice and dark, this is a draw for the townies who will stand around the bar and talk about everybody who isn't there. Peanut shells on the floor type of place. I crave Country House on a Sunday-excellent burgers, Southwest Chicken Wraps, EXCELLENT onion rings. Do NOT go on a weekend night. The Sunday crowd is older, tamer, and more mature. Unless you like getting pounced on every time you take a trip to the ladies' room or jukebox, even when your husband is sitting at the bar watching.

If you're not counting calories and looking for some REAL comfort food and FRIENDLY staff - you've got to give Country House a try. Most sandwich platters are modestly priced - specials are posted daily. This is NOT your cookie-cutter chain restaurant! Lots of character, a fireplace & even an obscure ghost story. Check it out!

I went here a while ago after hearing how this place is ranked highly on the best burger in the area. The inside & the building itself is small and quaint. Yes, I'd considered their burger to be a little above average, Yet, I wouldn't make a special trip back. The place is so small, that you constantly have to scoot in every time more customers walked passed you before being seated.

Absolutely the best burgers in the western suburbs, possibly in the entire Chicago area. If you don't want to wait a long time for a table, get here early, even by 5 pm if possible. Staff is courteous and friendly, the atmosphere is neighborhood-y and warm. Great beer selection and kid-friendly, although I suppose those two elements shouldn't be included in the same sentence. The fact that it is apparently haunted adds some fun to the place. The staff has some interesting tales to tell!

The Country House draws quite the crowd! Is it the food? The atmosphere? The ghost story? Who knows but the place was hopping on a Saturday night. We ended up waiting 30-40 minutes for a table for 4 but the time flew by as we had a cozy bench seat outside and some microbrews to keep us company. The restaurant itself is very retro with wood paneling everywhere but the food was good, burgers are huge (and they serve buffalo burgers)! Our server kept the brew flowing and we read up on the ghost story. No paranormal adventures on our trip, overall a nice place to grab some grub in the 'burbs.

I love this place! The first reason I love it is because of the story of the ghost lady that visits on ocassion and the second reason is for the Pastrami sandwich on a pretzel roll. We try to go during the week before the after work crowd stops in for cocktail hour and then we head for the table in front of the fireplace. The guy I'm dating loves the fact that he can throw peanut shells on the floor and in the fall we love the Irish coffee there. I've never seen the ghost, but the ambiance is great. It's dark and as someone mentioned it does in fact have the feel of an out of the way Wisconsin pub. It's pretty small and probably doesn't seat more than 75 people. But I've been here at least 6 times and I've never had a bad experience.

Ok, so for a restaurant that has won the best burger in Chicago title, I left yearning more. The burger was great but the best burger I have ever had? sadly, no. The options for burger meats is a plus, incase you are in the mood to try something different. The atmosphere is nice and the neat ghost story is cool too. We all enjoyed our meals but were not floored. We might come back if we are in the area.

A pretty darn good burger, if you're in the area (I wouldn't make a special trip for it). But the french fries are a quintessential part of my burger experience and the type served here are those thick, pale, flabby things that aren't worth the calories. After a glance at another diner's plate, I ordered the onion rings, which were quite good. The atmosphere is very old fashioned, with acoustical tile on the ceiling and old hunt-club prints on the walls. We got there at 5:00 on Saturday night, and still had to wait for a table in the non-smoking section. Service was very efficient and friendly. If it weren't for the flabby fries and my daughter's popcorn shrimp that was more breading than shrimp, I'd give it the full five stars.

Country House has the BEST burgers in the Chicago area. They are huge and very juicy. I love that they'll cook them to order, including rare (which we like) - as so many places have wimped out and only serve burgers medium to well done (I'd rather eat shoe leather). We love to go there on Tuesdays - when they have 50 cent oysters after 5:30pm. It has a cozy atmosphere that the other Country House locations can't match.

Best bar in the western suburbs! You feel as if you're at a lodge in the north woods of Wisconsin. The bartenders are knowledgeable, fun, old school PLUS they have a multitude of specialty beers on tap. Clearly a lot of the patrons are regulars but we, as newcomers, were made to feel extremely welcome & have made this our new hangout. I have to admit part of the draw is the fact that it is also considered 'haunted'...ask for a menu and the story at the bottom of it is enough to send shivers down your spine! Fun place!!!!

What a disappointment. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews from my fellow Yelpers, I was bitterly disappointed to have been so underwhelmed by the burgers here. We came in on a Saturday afternoon hankering for some good, juicy burgers. We both ordered the Country Burger with cheddar with the wifey opting for grilled onions. Hers was on the sesame bun while mine came on the dark rye. The Bad: both burgers were super greasy and really bland. My dark rye was not toasted and was already sopping wet with grease by the time it reached our table. My wife's sesame seed bun was not much better. The Good: The appetizer sampler was nice with a bunch of deep fried goodness - onion rings, hush puppies, zucchini sticks, nice 'shrooms and mozzarella sticks. All good. They also have Stella on tap! The decor is Wisconsin lodge/supper club fab. The wait staff is attentive. Now back to the meat of the matter the burgers...Maybe they had a bad night in the kitchen? Could have been... but I still prefer the burgers at Kuma's, Flub a Dub Chubs and the Fireside.

This place always looks close from the main street and when you walk in, it is so lively. Really cool bar/pub-ish place. I had the special pasta one night, a tad bit peppery overall good. Then the other time I had the whiskey bourbon steak with mushroom sauce, really good as well.

Oh my goodness between the ghost stories, the five-star burgers and yeah the ghost stories this has got to be my favorite place in the whole damn world. The food is excellent and the accounts of paranormal phenomena is more of the "joking ghost" variety so the place isn't creepy at all or at least shouldn't be for people who feel they are succeptible to that sort of thing or regard that sort of thing at all. I live in New Lenox and I seriously dream of the few times a year I make it out to Country House. I have the read the other reviews and yeah restaraunts trip up some times but this place seems to have a good track record. So get out to Clarendon and raise a pint in memory of Katie!

This place is really something else. It looks like a country house! Inside its very dimly lit with low ceiling, giving just the right amount of a cozy atmosphere without making you feel claustrophobic. For an appetizer we had the duck tenders which featured the probably one of the best BBQ dipping sauces i've had, with a hint of raspberry flavor. I had the Reuben which looked like a conquerable task but was delicious and very filling. The apple of my companion's eye was the hot pastrami sandwich which is unlike anything else in this world. I wish that we had room for desert. I've been craving sweets since that freaking cookie at RJ Grunts. Alas this is not your typical suburb place, but you would never find something like in this in the city as well.

Voted to have Chicago land's # 1 burger in 1999. The County House has a lot of history! It was built the early 1920's, on their website you can read all about it's history. They even have a link to a ghost story, on the left hand side. That's right I said ghost!, and it dates back to 1974. Which is why my friend's, and I drove all the way out here just to grab a bite to eat. Hey it's October, and we are always looking for place's to drink, accompanied by a conversation starter! The service was really good I must say. They do have a really decent menu selection. So if you don't want to get their voted #1 burger, they do have fish, and a few dishes geared toward vegetarians. I had pasta with fresh vegetables minus the chicken. It was a dollar less too, which is nice that they offer the dish both ways on the menu. I also, had a bowl of their clam chowder. It was really delicious, and hit the spot. While we were all eating, the lights in the country house turned off and on, which every one thought was interesting. We heard people whispering, is it a ghost? There it was the conversation starter. :) After dinner we moved over to bar area, and had a drink. The bar let's you throw the peanut shell's on the floor. Lol! Which is always fun... That's it! The exterior of the house, looks like a cozy farm house. You really can't see inside that well because , the window's have a red luminance. Inside is really cozy too! The Country House is in a nice dark part of town, so I recommend visiting it at night. It's appearance and feel, I think really helps hold up it's reputation.

Country House is OK, their burgers are not as good as everyone says they are. Very ordinary "pub fare". Not bad mind you, just not in the upper echelon of burgers in the Chicagoland area. DEPENDS on your perspective and point of reference. I have eaten at many touted burger places over the years, I consider myself a bit of an afficionado. I have heard people say it's one of the best. I am here to refute that claim. The service is very friendly, but the food is just average. Go, but don't go out of your way.

I really like the vibe here. Went here for food and drinks with a group. I guess the name of the restaurant says it all Country House. It's cozy, like you're in a small town in Wisconsin minus all the Packer fans ;) I ordered the Bison burger medium....and it actually came medium. The duck fingers were good (not great). It's a well run place designed for adults.

Best place ever! If I were on death row, my last meal would be a Kentucky bourbon, blue cheese and mushroom steak from Country House. I love the appetizers, I love the wait staff, I love the atmosphere! As a tradition my wife and I wait for the table in front of the fireplace in the bar every Christmas after we go to the zoo lights. Great place!

I live right down the street and have been coming her for about twice a month since i moved to the area. It's the type of place that i love to come more often during winter time and get a soup, Burger, and fries to warm up. Personally i don't think their standard hamburger that they rave about is anything special. Its good don't get me wrong, but it's not like "Wow this is the best burger ever". On the other hand the bison burger is exceptional, and is even more juicy and flavorful than the standard hamburger here. Burgers are served with their classic steak fries. They always come out super hot and perfectly salted. I'm sure their just normal frozen fries but i simply just like them a lot. I usually always get the bison burger but on occasion ill switch it up and get the Pork Chops which are awesome and would highly recommend, or i sometimes try the French dip which is solid. I would not recommend really getting any of their appetizers. It's pretty much just your standard bar food apps, although the duck tenders are the shining item of the bunch. Oh yea, and as i said before i like getting soups here. Usually they have a soup of the day rotation but they always have the french onion soup which is one of the best I've had. Come here for good service, good food, and a awesome atmosphere unlike any other place around.

Wednesdays are the best days to come bc they give out free French Ticklers. Love the French Onion soup, speaking of the Frogs. This place is haunted too. Burgers are great and can't go wrong with the HJ! Oliver Back is the bartender. Nice guy!

First, I have to admit my bias. I have been a patron of Country House since I was a kid. However, I continue to make it a point to visit every time I'm in Chicago (1-2x a year). Why? 1. "Everyone knows your name" Bartender Patti, makes you feel at home. She learns your name, knows your drink, gives you the latest on sports scores and has an infectious laugh. 2. Country Burger-I add Blue Cheese crumbles, but they use good quality meat to make a great burger 3. Fried Appetizers. When I get off the plane, the first thing I'm craving is some good old fried food that you can't get in California and Country House hits the spot. 4. Great Selection of Beer & Wines 5. The place is HAUNTED! Its been featured on tv shows, etc. So I'm always on the lookout for the "woman" ghost. Finally, as a bonus, they have a large parking lot, so parking has never been a struggle. I'll continue visiting...

Nice restaurant/bar that is rumored to be haunted! Back when I used to live right down Clarendon Hills Road from the Country House, I used to like to drop in for lunch when I was working from home. They have a variety of sandwiches and other goodies on the menu and I never went wrong no matter what I ordered. There's a very cozy (maybe too much so) dining area and a bar, too. The ambience is comfortable and what you'd commonly see before chain restaurants became all the rage. They are known for their burgers and you can't go wrong with any of those.... they even have a Bison Burger! Great place!

Well, this is a Yelp first. Every fiber of my being wants to leave zero stars, but ultimately I could not in good conscience. Four of us came here tonight for a friend's birthday..having heard and read good things from fellow Yelpers. We were greeted and sat quickly only to be approached by a flustered, sourpuss blonde waitress. Despite our best efforts to be kind, she fussed over the surrounding tables..while breezing right by us. Having been given an iced tea with a brown, spoiled lemon and waiting patiently for pop refills, a single finger was raised and an extremely polite, "Excuse me" to catch her as she was near resulted in our waitress spinning around and leaning forward, WAVING her finger in our faces while LOUDLY snapping, "I'M WAITING ON THIS TABLE RIGHT NOW SO YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT AND *THEN* I'LL GET TO YOU!" *AHEM* I can only equate this to the reprimand a mother gives a nagging child that has repeatedly tugged on her apron. Not only was this embarrassing... it was the height of unprofessionalism. We sat flabbergasted and everyone felt uncomfortable for not only were we being eyed by curious patrons, but this dampened our birthday spirits. It is the single rudest encounter I have experienced from a server. Honestly, words cannot even relate the b*tchiness. I got up and sought out the manager to ask for the appetizer check..only to have my waitress brush past me hurriedly..making physical contact without so much as a "pardon me". The manager is the sole reason I did not leave the establishment. Although I paid for all four burgers and beverages ($82 plus tip) this delightful woman comped our 2 appetizers and apologized profusely...even treating for dessert with candles. The most impressive part was that this lovely lady pinned up her gorgeous, long locks and waited our table PERSONALLY. Burgers were truly great (I had Bison) as were the duck strips, onion rings and poppers. So a heartfelt thank you to this dear young lady for salvaging the evening. She was patient, joyful, and sincere in every way possible. These stars are for her....a pleasure in contrast to the giant pain in the a**. Bummer. I won't be returning.

Stopped in on a weeknight around 6 p.m., and the place was freaking packed. Picked a good night and scored $2.75 Miller Lite drafts. Ordered a Top Drawer Burger with American cheese, onions, mushrooms, and bacon, on a pretzel bun with steak fries. Burger was decent enough but nothing spectacular. Juicy, cooked to medium, and a formidable gut-buster, just not a whole lot of flavor...no pop! For all of the fanfare, I expected more out of the $18 Short Rib, Chuck, Brisket Burger. It was good, and I'll definitely stop in again, but nothing that silences the nearby competition. In all actuality, the steak fries finished ahead (of the burger) in their respective field. Bar service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a local watering hole worth checking out, just not one I plan on calling my "go-to" anytime soon.

Good food, interesting menu selections, friendly service. If you're looking for a low key place to unwind, The Country House is your spot. We love sitting in the bar for dinner. Both the bartenders and patrons are warm and welcoming!

I've gone to the Country House in Geneva soooo many times! I was excited to see that upon moving to Westmont there was another one right around the corner from me! Seems like the menu is the same or at least 90% the same as the Geneva location. I came here last Friday night around 8:30 p.m. It was the first Friday night I'd been out since having our baby so I was excited! Even better, we came with some old friends that were back in town visiting. I decided to take them here since I'd been wanting to check this location out and I knew they had a good beer selection. My friends love their beer! Well we came in and there was a 30 minute wait. We decided to put our name down and we headed to the bar to get a drink while we waited. There weren't any seats so we stood on the peanut shells drinking our beers while we waited for a table to open up. Personally, I'm not a fan of the peanuts and the shells on the floor. I think it makes the place less classy and dirty. I also think the shells are a trip and fall hazard. I also wish the ventilation system was a little better in the bar area. This is mainly because we totally got crop dusted! Eww, the smell was horrible and just lingered forever!! Once the hostess called our names - the wait was about a 20 minutes - we headed to the dining room and were seated. Now, this place is crammed with chairs and tables already, but when you add a full house it is nearly impossible to walk around without physically bumping into other people. If you are claustrophobic I would find another place to get dinner. All of our meals were delicious. The spinach dip was piping hot and came with plenty of pita toast points. My bison burger was mouthwatering and hit the spot. I would highly suggest their burgers whether beef, bison, or ostrich. All equally delish! Overall I like this place because the food is good and hearty. And this past weekend the service was spot on. We will be back in the future.

Pros: -delicious burgers with options including veggie and turkey -you choose buns, toppings, and sides -they also have sandwiches, salads, and soups -club to earn 5% back for what spend -large beer selection -good fried food -bar and dining area -large parking lot -pumpkin bread pudding...enough said Cons: -tables are all squished together -coleslaw is no good

This place has amazing chili! My beau and I came here because Bishop's Chili down the street was closed. Man am I glad we did! Thanks to Yelp, I found this place. The chili was so SO good: it had ground beef, big chunks of tomatoes, fresh onions and cheese on top, green peppers, jalepenos, and a side of oyster crackers. Another great part was the hearty portion size. The only unfortunate thing was that they charged $0.80 for onion and cheese on the chili. We also got the duck tender appetizer which was also a good portion size with a lot of tenders. It was nice that it wasn't super breaded either. The overall feel of Country House is warm and cozy. Lighting is dim, with traditional country style wood furniture and wood paneled walls. Our waitress was friendly, quick, and responsive. I have no complaints about this restaurant. The food was great and we will def come back!!

This is a fantastic burger. Everything was perfect. Our server "Leslie" was the best. Totally accommodating. We were a large table and she gave each of us individual attention. My friends and I will return multiple times.

I just love, love, love the Country House. My parents met here, I grew up down the street from here, and I've been coming here since I was a little kid. All nostalgia aside, now as a grown adult, I still love this place. Their french onion soup is amazing. The bowl is a generous portion and baked with tons of delicious melty cheese on top. I always begin my meal with it. Due to the sheer amount of years I've been coming here, I've tried a LOT of items, and everything is good. I like the pasta with chicken and vegetables, the Kentucky bourbon steak - but my fave, and the thing I always come back to - is the country burger. You have so many delicious options - what kind of bread? Cheese? Onion? And it's awesome every single time. I'm partial to a medium rare burger with bleu cheese and no onion on dark rye. The fries are enormous thick cut steak fries and I always manage to clean my plate. If you're looking for contemporary or cutting edge, look elsewhere. But if you want delicious, reliable casual eats in an equally casual environment (with a great ghost story attached!) get yourself to the country house, pronto.

We come here often since we live just down the street. I normally get the Top Shelf burger with the steak fries. The burgers are always A-MAZING! The steak fries are cut super thick and are the perfect companion to the juicy burger. On this occasion though, I wasn't really wanting a burger, so I went with the Fish and Chips. For the Win! I love fish and chips. These were, hands down, the best I've ever had! The batter was light and fried perfectly to just the right crispness. The fish was moist and flavorful. But what really set them apart was the tartar sauce... Oh. My. Gosh. Sometimes I have to forfeit to using ketchup with fish and chips when the tartar sauce is sub-par. Country House's is on point! I may have to order a jar next time to go! My wife went with her usual, the Top Shelf burger, which she really enjoyed. My brother and his girlfriend shared a plate, the Bacon Burger and fries. I'm not much for dessert, especially since the serving sizes are so big. My brother's girlfriend got the cheesecake and insisted that everyone try. I had one bite that was very, very good! I'm awarding the five star here solely on the food. I really wish they could expand their dining area. The wait is ALWAYS super long and the bar isn't large enough to accommodate the waiting patrons. It's really cramped quarters and you're forced to awkwardly stand shoulder to shoulder with other folks waiting.

WOW, is this place still open? We went there for their oyster special, not sure if they still do it, but it ran from 4 till 6. Arrived at 4:15 Waited to be seated, but had a couple (who obviously knew the staff) seated before us, when questioned, we were told they had "priority" Asked how we can get "priority", was informed we cannot. Waited Seated at 5:30 Ordered 2 dozen Oysters, and informed they were out. 5:45 walked out never to return

If you want a delicious, juicy hamburger this is the place to go. It's reasonably priced and their fries are delicious as well! It's truly the best hamburger you can get. Always made perfectly to order and you don't wait long for your meal.

Veggie Burger great, Turkey Burger great, nice beers on tap. We got in while it was very packed and did not have reservations, luckily a bar side table just opened up, so we got seated there with the kids. The kids loved being able to eat and throw peanut shells on the floor... not gonna lie, I loved it too. But definitely a great burger place to check out in the burbs. Also, DEFINITELY try the poblano poppers... just started drooling, thinking about them.

This place has good classic food. We came here for St. Patrick's day, and they had Irish specials (corned beef, Shepard's pie). We went with a buffalo burger and chicken sandwich. Everything was fresh and delicious. The place was very busy, but luckily we didn't have to wait for a table. The tables were very crammed. If there was a fire, it might be hard to get out. Service was just ok. Nothing special.

  • Dave M.

We regularly get take-out from Country House and particularly enjoy the Buffalo Burgers and chili. Potential diners should know that there are unavoidable steps at the entrance, and once inside, there is no handicapped accessible bathroom. The manager said that they had been "grandfathered in". So if your party has people who are mobility impaired, you might want to do take-out or go to the Lisle location.

The food is ok but it's overpriced. A bison burger is $15. Less expensive lemon tree on downers grove and their bison burger is better

This is one of those throw-the-peanut-shells-on-the-ground type of places.. Except you actually get to throw the peanut shells on the ground. Staff is also super friendly; we enjoy sitting at the bar. Good place to watch a Hawks game; not too loud. They have a weekly dish that alternates. Was able to have my burger "southwest" style, as that was the dish of the week. Another time was there late enough to take advantage of the 1/2 price appetizers. The spinach & artichoke dip was one of the best I've ever had. And you get PLENTY! Very reasonably priced. Dying to make it in on a Sunday for a $3 Bloody Mary! Giving 5 stars, because I don't think any of our 3 experiences were missing anything! Can't wait to go back & try soemthjng new.

If you want a guaranteed fantastic meal or a well made cocktail you just cannot do better than this place. It's come as you are. I've never felt over or under dressed. Appetizer, or something to go with your beer? Savannah Shrimp all the way. A good sized portion, enough to split, served with fresh French Bread to soak up all the slightly spicy, buttery sauce. The servers all aim to please. Jodi, Heather, Patty are all pro's. The bartenders, Ryan, Patti O. and Stanley are friendly and right on top of it. An additional great thing is no matter your diet they can accommodate. Gluten free options, vegetarian options. So if you are a meat eater ad craving the area's best burger and your friend is a vegetarian, you can both enjoy a wonderful meal! The bar is the romantic spot. Ask for the fireplace table.

My phone was blatantly stolen off the bar by the couple seated next to me. A few patrons, not the staff , helped me locate my phone right in the pocket of this thief. As manager, Lynn approached me about the situation, her response to me was " well ya got your phone back, didn't ya"? No apology, nothing but her rudeness and an unprofessional resolution to an already negative situation. If you value your belongings, run far away from this place. Yes, this happened! It was yesterday afternoon 1-1-15 at the Clarendon Hills location. I will never step foot in this establishment again after forty years of patronage . Such a shame, and the staff should be ashamed as well to work for such a manager, again named Lynn. Beware!!!!!

I've tried 3 separate times to eat here. I was successful only once. The place is way too cramped. There always seems to be a wait and, because of the limited space, there is no place to comfortably wait. You're always in the way of the wait staff or other customers. Last time I went, although it wasn't that busy, we were told that it would be less than a 5 minute wait. We ended up waiting for 20 minutes and watched a couple who came in after us get seated before us. When we did get seated it was the smallest most cramped table in there where I couldn't even pull out my chair without hitting someone with it. I never sat down. We just walked out. Who wants to sit down for dinner and bump elbows with the people at the table next to you? They have a good burger but it's definitely not worth the hassle. Never going back.

So, where to begin...I've been here once before and my first experience was terrible. The burger I had was flavorless. Tasted watered down and just flat out boring. Why I would ever come back is beyond me. The service? What service? I just walked out of this place because no one. Absolutely no one out of the 15 min that we were there came to even start us off on drinks. The place had only about 20 people with three servers. Two of which were just walking around. Unbelievable, I will NEVER come back here again.

Had the duck tenders appetizer and shrimp appetizer which were AMAZING! Minnestrone soup was excellent and you could tell was made from scratch. My boyfriend had pretzel crusted fish and was very good. Also had pumpkin bread pudding which was out of this world. We went on a Tuesday night and there was a slight wait but well worth it. We will definitely be back. Food and service were top notch.

this place has a great burger and the Bartenders are more than welcoming. the sides are very good to. I personally prefer to eat in bar area so you can see television while eating. they also give you peanuts while sitting in bar area. never had a bad meal here.

I gave two stars because of the staff is friendly. I've called multiple times for pick up order and the wait usual an hour, once the girl on the other end of the phone told me I should go some where else because the wait for pick up was so long. I've also dinner in at this location and both times they have over cook my burger. It's a little disappointing when you are looking forward to a good burger. Yes, I would said they very good burgers.

We always enjoy sitting at the bar at the Country House. A very comfortable neighborhood restaurant and bar that is a staple in our dining routine. They do half price appetizers after 9 and cheap burgers too! Great place to unwind if you can get a table because they are usually packed.

The Country House has two new regulars with my wife and I! We ate there last night at 11pm after catching the new Hunger Games movie. We have driven past a million times, as we live just up 55th St. a ways in Downers but had never stopped. I asked my wife to search for restaurants on Yelp that were open late and had decent reviews, which led us to CH. We started with the Savannah Shrimp appetizer. Tender shrimp cooked in butter with a great blend of seasonings and a light spicy kick. Fresh, soft French bread on the side allows you to dip into the tasty melted butter sauce. My wife got the Bison burger on a sesame bun with sautéed onions, cooked medium. Side of onion rings. She said it was cooked perfectly to her liking and very flavorful. I had the Top Drawer burger, medium rare on a pretzel roll with steak fries... One of the best burgers of recent memory! Cooked to perfection. Extremely juicy! The combinations of meats was a match made in carnivore heaven... The pretzel roll held up perfectly to the extra juicy meat, never getting soggy throughout the meal. Thanks also to our server who was very attentive. Drink refills came promptly and without being asked for. Unfortunately, I didn't catch her name. As I work in Chicago, it's refreshing to see good food like this coming in at a reasonable price! We will most definitely be back soon, especially after noticing they are an official Chicago Bears bar!

Haunted?? Been there many times over the years, some experiences better than others, will circle back after my next visit if things improve. The place is really dark inside. Not real clean. Service about as mixed as the food quality. Waitresses, r always very experienced and often a bit down trodden. Orders usually taken correctly in the dark. Like the clam chowder on Fridays. Tables very close together. Bar is often noisy, sit far away if that is an option.
